The Secret Life of Maggie Grey was hands down one of my favorite reads for 2024. When I say this book was chaotic but in the best way, I mean it!
Set in Atlanta at an HBCU for magical beings, the story pulled me in after a bit of a slow start. Honestly, at first, I was like, What is going on? It felt a little boring, and I was waiting for the action to start (I like my books to grab me right away). But trust me, it’s worth sticking with because once it picks up, it’s a whirlwind. If you’re a fan of twists, turns, and fast-paced storytelling, this one’s for you.
Let’s talk spice level. It’s about a 2/5. There are moments where it’s hinted at but not described in detail, so you know it’s happening but it doesn’t take center stage.
Now, what I really loved? The friendships. Maggie, Souxie, Isis, and Asha are such a vibe. Maggie, the main character, gets sucked into this new magical world and crosses paths with Souxie on her way to Drew Collins (the HBCU). Souxie’s dad is a whole character, boisterous and basically bullies them into being friends. Honestly, I’m curious to hear what y’all think about him after you read the book.
Souxie gives major black cat energy, mysterious and focused. She has her own goals at Drew Collins but definitely gets sidetracked. Then there’s Isis, the free spirit who does what she wants, when she wants, and doesn’t care what anyone thinks. Love her! And finally, Asha, who has this hard exterior as a defense mechanism because she’s been through a lot. Together, these girls create such a strong bond, forming a sisterhood that’s both heartwarming and relatable.
Now, let’s talk endings. This one finishes on a cliffhanger, and I immediately dove into the second book, The First Family. Another must-read! Now I’m (impatiently) waiting for book three.
Have you read The Secret Life of Maggie Grey? Let me know what you think, especially about Souxie’s dad because whew, he’s something else!
